Shots from the slot

A shot taken from inside the slot goes in 11.4% of the time — 19,500 goals from 170,664 attempts. From outside it, 3.3%. That gap is what the slot shading is for.

  1. Close in — within 33 feet of the net. This one counts.
  2. And between the face-off dots. The shaded band is exactly that wide, so you can check a mark against it: this one is too far out to the side.
  3. And in front of the goal line. A shot recorded from behind the net is close to the slot, but it is not from the slot.

The slot is not rare, and that is the point: 170,664 of 365,382 located attempts — 46.7% — are already taken from inside it. So the shading does not mark where the shots are; it marks where they go in. Blocked shots are in neither count, because the coordinate the feed records for one is where the puck was stopped — the blocker’s position, not the shooter’s.
